Just an update on Sunday’s Callao outing: as well as the excitement of seeing the famous fort, I also saw a famous face! The sleb spot was Peruvian congressman Jaime Delgado, tucking into a fishy lunch in a restaurant in La Punta.

My initial Googling of Delgado returned a wealth of hits and images, even from UK sites: this really was an impressive spot! However, on closer inspection it turned out that this was the result of a typo, and all featured Jamie Delgado, professional English tennis player…

The Peruvian Delgado is still a prominent figure though, having been elected congressman with one of the highest ratings in the country. His primary concern seems to be the defense of consumer rights and during his political career he has established various councils and boards to investigate issues such as misleading advertising as well as promoting responsibility and transparency amongst companies and businesses. In 1994 he founded ASPEC, the Peruvian Association of Consumers and Users, a non-profit institution which promotes citizens rights and continues today. 15 – love to Peruvian JD.

Delgado’s current campaigns featured on his website include promoting breast feeding and women’s rights for natural birth and maternity care, encouraging the re-use of educational text books and material, tackling childhood obesity and investigating a web of environmental, traffic and safety issues in the beach resort of Mancora: all seemingly good stuff.

Plus, the guy is well-educated and lectures and teaches widely: all clearly supported by the fact that he reads really big books.
